Stomp 1

Walk along Scott Road before turning right, through the concrete bollards, into Limberline Spur. Before you leave Scott Road, stop and pause. How was 2024 for you? Everyone experienced it differently, but we all have something to be grateful for. Shout out loud something you were grateful for last year.

Stomp 2

Cut through the industrial estate, with Ferryspeed on your left, and watch out as there are often large lorries moving around. Stop by the café called GGs Corner. Most of us ate very well over the Christmas period… what food did you appreciate most over Christmas? Share with your walking friends.

Stomp 3

Continue walking down Limberline Spur, then

Timberline Road and Gunstore Road, with Tomburn Finishers on your right. Pop out of the industrial estate opposite Merlin Drive, which leads to Hobby Close. Stop for a moment. Lots of us enjoy different hobbies – from reading to playing boardgames or playing football to dancing. Christians believe God has given us all different talents and likes/dislikes. What hobby are you looking forward to doing more of in 2025? Share with your walking friends.

Stomp 4

Turn right at the roundabout, walk along towards Lidl, on the Norway Road pavement, back towards Copnor Road. Cross the road using the 3 crossings to end up on the opposite side to the Toby Carvery. Stop for a moment. Restaurants are the kind of places where friends meet up to chat and spend time together. Spend a moment thinking about who’s been by your side in 2024 and will continue to be supporting you in 2025. Prayer is a conversation with God and this can be said out loud or in our heads. Christians believe friends are a gift from God – so you may wish to say a silent prayer of thanks for your friends.

Stomp 5

Walk down Copnor Road and turn into St Barbara Way and then The Ridings. Pause to the right of the charity collection points for The Salvation Army and British Heart Foundation.

The building behind them looks big and strong.

What’s big and strong in your life? Your family? Your friends? Your job? Christians believe God is big and strong and that he’s in control of our lives and guiding us. Is this a reassuring thought for you as we move into a new year? Share with your walking friends if you’d like.

Stomp 6

Follow the route down The Ridings and, just past Egan Close, take the alleyway on your left and go through the end railings into the end of Gatcombe Drive. Turn left. As you enter Gatcombe Park stop and pause. Breathe deeply – in through your nose and out through your mouth - and think about the beauty of the world we live in. Find something natural to hold, such as a leaf or blade of grass, and examine it as you breathe. Christians believe God created what you’re holding. They also believe that he wanted the world to have one of you too – someone special and loved by him. How does that make you feel?

Stomp 7

Turn right (if you don’t mind getting muddy!) or otherwise follow the path through Gatcombe Park. In the park is a stone bandstand – sometimes these are called follies which means ornamental buildings. But the word folly can also mean being foolish/making a mistake. We all make mistakes and do things wrong. Place a stone at the foot of the bandstand or on the path, depending on your route, to acknowledge something you did wrong in 2024. Christians believe God forgives us for the wrong things we do, say or think, if we ask him to. You may wish to silently ask God to forgive you for whatever your stone represents.

Stomp 8

Continue through the park, exit onto Copnor Road via the gate and make sure it’s shut behind you. You’ve popped out opposite a gym/health club. Stop and pause. What was hard for you in 2024? What was good for you in 2024? All the big moments and the small ordinary moments we experience are what makes us unique. Share with your walking friends if you’d like to.

Stomp 9

Walk down Copnor Road, cross Amberley Road, Merrivale Road and Torrington Road.

Turn down Maderia Road, then left into

Compton Road. As you walk, look out for any Christmas lights still up and pause somewhere enroute. The sparkly lights make us happy and give us hope. What are you hopeful for in 2025? Maybe you have a special occasion planned or you’re going on holiday. Or it could be something as simple as wanting to be happy or peaceful in the coming months. Share with your walking friends.

Stomp 10

Follow Compton Road round the corner, go past the newly built homes on your left and cut through using the alleyway, just after number 90A, to come out in Battenburg Avenue/opposite Kensington Road and next to St Nicholas church. Stop and pause in the church grounds. Well done for completing the walk! Many people make resolutions at the start of a New Year to get fit or exercise more or lose weight. Have you made any resolutions? Share with your walking friends. But what does it mean to be spiritually fit? This could mean getting to know God better. Is there something you could do in 2025 to make this happen? You could read the Bible, pray, visit a church or go to a Christian club like Girls’ or Boys’ Brigade. If you’re not sure but want to find out more about God, then please speak to the New Year’s Stomp organisers.

Please come into the church for refreshments and a small gift of a wooden crown for taking part. We’d love you to put the crown somewhere you can see it each day to remind you about something you’ve learnt or thought about on the New Year’s Stomp. You can even colour it in using colouring pens.

The New Year’s Stomp was brought to you by the Compass

Project Portsmouth - supported by 8th Portsmouth Girls’ Brigade and 4th Portsmouth Boys’ Brigade, Portsmouth Methodist Church and St Nicholas C of E Church.

If you have a printed handout, please recycle it at home.

To return to the walk’s starting point, it’s quicker to walk straight up Copnor Road and turn left into Peronne Road.
