As we both prepare for this new transition, it is indeed an intense paradox for the both of us as we both feel two conflicting things at the exact same time, whereby learning to hold space for both the excitement and sadness without letting the anxiety take over.
To make this physical shift easier, we have built tangible connections in areas of comfort items – whereby she knitted her “special mat” as she will sit on whenever she feels fragile, communication plan – a realistic routine for phone calls and letters, at the same time giving her enough space to immerse herself in school life without feeling abandoned and the shared journal.
This transition forces a mother to face the hardest truth of parenting which is to raise children who can survive, thrive and build a life entirely without us. As I watch my youngest, the baby of the house packs her bags, I trust that the foundation we have built, the warmth, the values and beliefs, the resilience are going with her and the space between us will grow with the bond stretched.
As we prepare to part ways in this season of change and transition we are being reassured by the 23rd Psalms of David specifically on verse 2 which talks about the green pastures and quiet waters. This gives reassurance that though we are 483miles apart, our lives will still be connected through this time of separation.
